Dorset County Museum is always interested in hearing about exhibition proposals from practising artists, painters, potters, craftspeople and community groups.

Artists who have recently staged successful exhibitions of their work at Dorset County Museum include the potters Richard Batterham and Mike Dodd, printmaker Peter Ursem, painters Amanda Wallwork and Jeremy Gardiner, and the textile artist Alice Kettle. Successful community exhibitors have included the Dorchester Photographic Club, the South Dorset Ridgeway Heritage Project and the Dorset Castles Research Group.

To accommodate this diverse range of displays Dorset County Museum maintains a well equipped modern temporary exhibitions gallery. Recognised by the Arts Council as the leading exhibition space in Dorset, this has floor space for displays of up to 1500 square ft, while up to seventy framed works can be hung in the gallery’s 136 ft of wall space. Twenty-eight portable floor screens are also available, by arrangement, to supplement wall-hanging space. In addition the Victorian Gallery, built as the Museum’s main gallery in 1883, can also used as a subsidiary exhibition space for smaller displays (lecture and events programme permitting).

All exhibitors will need to submit a full proposal which will be assessed by the Museum’s Temporary Exhibitions Working Group. The exhibition programme is normally planned at least two years in advance, with major exhibitions planned up to four years in advance. Exhibitors are advised to download and consult a copy of our Exhibitions Policy from the link at the bottom of the page, which outlines the criteria used in the selection process for temporary exhibitions and to discuss their proposal with the Museum prior to its submission.
